It is believed that the foundation of the mosque was laid during 692 AD, while other findings reveal that the Mosque was founded around the 11th century. However, Al-Khamis Mosque has undergone reconstructions during the 14th and 15th centuries, when the minarets in Bahrain were built. It has also undergone renovations in the recent past.

The most striking features of the Mosque are the twin towers rising high, and around the tower are the arches seen in most modern mosques. The Minarets of Al Khamis Mosque makes it easy for travellers to identify the Mosque from a distance, when driving along the Shaikh Salman Road in Khamis. Located in Khamis, between Isa Town and Salmaniya, the locality is mostly residential area, but, the towers are easily visible when driving through the Shaikh Salman Road.
