The Tree of Life

The Tree of Life (also known as Sharajat-al-Hayal), located 2 kms away from Jebel Dukhan, is a 400 year old, 32 feet tall mesquite tree. It is a lone tree standing in a sea of sand (25-foot high sandy hill), which almost seems like a mirage, and appears broad, shady, and mature in solitary splendour.

The tree's source of water till date, however, remains a mystery. While some believe it gets its nourishment from an underground spring, it is still surprising considering the lack of vegetation in the area surrounding it. Mesquite trees, usually adapts well to arid environments, and possess the deepest known root systems. According to the local people, the tree's longevity is granted by Enki, the mythical God of water, and marks the location of Garden of Eden.

On the whole, the Tree of Life in Bahrain is one of the mysteries in the world, which should be included in the sight-seeing list when visiting Bahrain. The name, Tree of Life, aptly suits as it truly represents the magic of life, as despite being the old lone tree, it has fresh green leaves, and is still surviving as the only green source in an otherwise white desert.
